A Journey Across Pixels, Pathways, and Bulldozers

Greetings! I’m Scott Finn—a curious soul who’s journeyed across state lines, climbed metaphorical mountains, and wielded both cameras and stardust. Buckle up; let’s explore the pixels and pathways that define my adventure.

From Montana’s Peaks to Carolina’s Sweet Tea

The Early Chapters

Born under Montana’s big sky in 1971, my family’s spirit led us zigzagging across the United States until we finally anchored ourselves in Fort Mill, South Carolina—a place where southern charm, a slow lyrical drawl, and the flow of sweet tea feel like home.

Academia and the Great Outdoors

After high school in 1990, I embarked on an academic odyssey. Francis Marion University in Florence, Clemson University in Clemson—each a chapter in my book. Clemson—Where the Tigers roar among the camaraderie of fellow scholars. It was there that I honed my understanding of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management.

The Aiken Parks and Recreation Interlude

Adventures Under the Palmetto Sky

In the fall of 1996, I moved to Aiken, South Carolina, where I worked for the City of Aiken Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department. As the recreation program coordinator, I became the architect of memories. Scheduling summer camp activities, overseeing an outdoor climbing facility, planning outdoor adventure trips, and curating unique events—it was a canvas of joy and laughter.

The Winthrop Chronicles

Athletic Adventures

In 1998, I returned to Fort Mill, and the area once known as the farm for Winthrop College before it became Winthrop University Athletic Complex opened wide. My tenure began as the Athletic and Coliseum Operations Assistant. Picture me juggling facility management, event logistics, and the art of turning a basketball court into a stage. Winthrop’s athletic department blossomed, and championships sprouted like wildflowers.

Streaming Pioneers

Then came 2007—the year web-streaming whispered its promise. The athletic department sensed the magic. So, I donned a director’s hat (and with a lot of courage) and became the understudy of video broadcasting. Editing? A mystery. But with students by my side, we wove pre-game interviews and special segments into the game-day symphony.

The Independent Contractor Saga

Across the AV Universe

In 2011, I closed the Winthrop chapter. The road called, and I answered. As an independent contractor, I crisscrossed the United States—installing AV equipment, weaving digital threads, and leaving my mark. Universities, organizations, and businesses—they all hummed with my handiwork.

The York Technical College Chapter

Applied Science and New Horizons

In 2013 and 2014, I cut back on my travels. Why? To complete an associate’s degree in applied science in computer technology from York Technical College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The pixels met the circuits, and I found new pathways to explore.

The Intermezzo of Downtime

Glass, Music, and the Uncharted Tomorrow

When my suitcase rested, I reveled in life’s quieter notes. Glass sign work—where letters whispered secrets. Music—the universal language that danced with my soul. And to live a childhood fantasy? Well, that’s when I enrolled in a heavy equipment course in 2019. Bulldozers demanded respect, excavators pirouetted with authority, and skid steers jostled between them both. It was AMAZING!!!

The Epilogue: Where Stars Collide

Tomorrow’s Unwritten Verse

As I pen this, I stand at the crossroads. The compass spins, and the map remains blank. But here’s the secret: I embrace the unknown. Tomorrow’s adventure? It’ll happen. Maybe in pixels, perhaps on a dirt path, or who knows—a cosmic voyage.

Glass Signs

Design Process

This is a summary of the process that goes into creating a glass sign.

Glass:

Many of the framed pieces are off-the-shelf photography framing kits. The glass in the kit is used in the process. The frames are to showcase and protect the finished piece. Nameplates (4"x 8") and some of the signs were custom cut pieces of glass.

Acid Etching: (optional)

The etching is done with a diluted solution of Amour Etch and a medium. I do not use pure hydrofluoric acid mixed with a medium. A vinyl cutout of the design provides a barrier for etching. After a given time, the etching medium is removed and the glass is washed before proceeding to the next process.

Hand Gilding:

After a thorough cleaning, gilder's liquor is applied to the area(s) that is to be leafed. I use 23.5 carat gold leaf, 99.9% silver leaf, and various colors of imitation leaf in the designs. For many of the mirrors, 23.5 carat gold leaf or 99.9% silver leaf is used. Lines where the leaf was added do appear during mirroring. This gives the sign an old mirror look. I do not use chemical silvering.

Paints: (optional)

I will use sign paint to outline or highlight areas in the design. Black backing paint is applied in the last step of the process.

I am exploring other methods to add to the design process.

Finger nail Test

One layer of gilding will create a two-way mirror. Finger nail test. After the second layer and backing paint, the sign will become a mirror.
